Job started

I started the part time job today. MrTops and Crankmaster took Grandma off on a cruise while I settled down to get brain working again. I say cruise but really it was a river cat from Circular Quay to Parramatta. But from all reports it was great. I usually find even a short trip on the ferry makes you smile. Boats are fun.

My day was spend logging in and changing passwords and setting up all the various utilities I will need to be productive - getting on the new unix box and pissing in all the corners and moving things around and generally getting comfortable. Several of the applications were a bit recalcitrant. The source control system is a little different to what I've used before so I needed to learn the new magic words to make it do what I want it to do. I know what it should do but each program changes the command names to make it slightly different.

After six hours, brain was well and truely tired but I did get a few things sorted and put new code back into the system. Things aren't finished but I have made a start. And I know what I need to work on tomorrow. There is still a lot to learn and things to configure so I can have a system to test on but clear progress has been made.

I must say Ubuntu is a cunning system. It was so easy to install the extra applications I needed. I'm not a system administrator but getting set up to work on this system was painless. I did get MrTops to install the Ubuntu in the first place since he has more experience with building machines in the first place. But now I have the machine set up it is lovely to play with.
